Oily skin is caused by an overproduction of fat in the sebaceous glands of the skin. There may be several factors that cause the skin to be oily, but the most common reasons are hormonal, hereditary or due to incorrect skin care products that cause an imbalance in the skin. Because sebum production is more active, this skin type more often has problems with congestion, such as blackheads, pimples and acne.
Many people wrongly believe that oily skin requires strong and dehydrating cleansing products. On the contrary, oily skin requires mild care with products that balance sebum production while simultaneously moisturising the skin. Dehydrated skin may in some cases produce even more sebum to compensate. A lighter moisturiser or gel is a good alternative. Cleansing may be deep but mild cleansing and depending on how your skin feels, an astringent face water may also be appropriate. Exfoliating products that dissolve obstructions complement these solutions well, so the sebum can pass freely. Generally oily skin ages later than dry skin, as the sebum protects and lubricates the skin surface naturally.
