Eczema

Eczema is an inflammation of the skin brought on by impaired barrier function and causes the skin to become dry, red and often itchy. There are various types of eczema that can for example, be due to dry skin, an allergy, irritating substances or harsh climates. It usually occurs as a skin rash in the form of redness, swelling, itching and dryness, and possibly crusting, blistering, scaling, stretching and bleeding. Common areas are, for example, around the eyes, the décolletage, cheeks and scalp.

To treat eczema, it is important to focus on ingredients that relieve dryness and build up the skin barrier, such as moisturising lipids like ceramides. Tamanu oil and rosehip oil also relieve dry skin, and there are also many reparative botanical ingredients like lotus extracts that have soothing properties. It is also important to protect the skin from external stressors and therefore ingredients such as beeswax and petrolatum can be of great use, as they lay like a protective film on the skin, preventing moisture loss and protecting against potentially irritating substances.
